| "The Refugees" I spent two years working in a studio located over the refugee center in Arran Quay. This aquainted me with the tremendous difficulties experienced by these lost souls. I determined to express my reaction to their plight in this painting. |

| £5OO Award for the Artist with the most potential for future appreciation . I was greatly uplifted by this award which came at a time when I was feeling particularily isolated and out of step. I felt that my style of painting was out of fashion and would not attract this sort of recognition. |

| The award was for a portrait of my good friend Henry Murphy who lives in the ground floor flat in the house where I live. I had been reading 'The road to Wigan Pier' by George Orwell and felt that Henry was an ideal subject to express the feelings that this book produced in me. |

Thousands of portait painters from the British Isles enter for this award and only sixty works are selected for showing. Being hung in this exhibition indicates that your work is considered by your peers to be of the highest professional standard. |
